The Experience by Mothers of an Adult Child with Mental Retardation during an Adult Child¡¯s Lifetime

Abstract
Purpose:This study speculated the experience by mothers of an adult child with mental retardation during an adult child¡¯s lifetime.

Methods:A qualitative research method was employed using the Giorgi¡¯s phenomenological research method. The participants were five mothers of an adult child with mental retardation. The authors interviewed the participants to listen to their experience. The participants¡¯ statements were analyzed, and 12 sub-themes and five main themes were driven.

Results:Five themes were ¡°psychological change for disability,¡± ¡°residential facilities for an adult child with disability,¡± ¡°ineffectiveness of education and therapy,¡± ¡°marriage of an adult child with disability,¡± and ¡°information management for an adult child with disability.¡±

Conclusion:First, the mothers of an adult child with mental retardation experienced psychological change for disability issues. Second, the mothers currently experienced the needs for residential care facilities. Third, the mothers regarded their efforts for education and therapy as ineffective. Fourth, the mothers were reluctant to let their adult child get married. Finally, an information management was essential for caring an adult child with mental retardation after their parents¡¯ death.
